Scleral Lenses

Scleral Lenses

If you’ve been told in the past that you can’t wear contact lenses due to an irregular cornea or other abnormality, scleral contact lenses may be an option. At Davich Optical, we’re all about helping our patients achieve the excellent vision through whatever means they feel most comfortable. Scleral contacts are just one more way we can serve our hard-to-fit patients and meet their vision care needs.

What are scleral contacts?

Scleral contact lenses are a special type of gas permeable lens. They feature a larger diameter and are designed to cover the entire corneal surface, resting on the sclera – or white – of the eye. As a result, scleral lenses replace the irregular cornea with a perfectly smooth optical surface. Additionally, the space between the cornea and the back surface of the lens acts as a fluid reservoir, providing maximum comfort for individuals suffering from dry eye.

Scleral lenses can be used to address vision problems such as karatoconus and other corneal irregularities. They are also frequently used in patients who still require contact lenses following LASIK or other corneal refractive surgical procedure.

Scleral Lens Fittings

If the doctor believes you would be a good candidate for scleral lenses, the next step will involve determining the ideal size of the lens. This is based primarily on the type of underlying vision problem as well as its complexity. During your comprehensive contact lens exam and fitting, the eye doctor will recommend the best scleral lens type and size for your specific needs.
